A Word On Slow Fashion
We live in a world where people only wear around 10% of their wardrobe and expect next day delivery on everything they buy, sold to them at the cheapest possible prices. This has a negative effect on independent designers, as well as the environment as we throw millions of tons of clothing away every year which ends up in landfill. The fashion industry is one of the worst contributors to waste and global warming due to the resources involved in making so many items of clothing to keep up with the impossible demand.
Years ago, before the era of fast fashion, designers created between 4 and 12 new collections per year, now they are expected to produce that per month to keep up with their competitors.
I am saying no to fast fashion. My business is small, but even us little guys can make a difference by leading by example and spreading the word of the benefits of 'going slow'.
All of my garments are produced by myself, by hand, cut from locally sourced cloth which is vegan friendly and has not been produced with forced labour. I refuse to sell cheap t shirts with my designs printed on them because nobody stops to ask who made the t shirts and how much they were paid or what the conditions were like, and when I have asked no one seems to want to give me a straight answer. I do not modify cheap hoodies either, I make absolutely everything on this website myself and I take pride in doing so.
Quality takes time and costs money. I have been producing clothing in various forms for over a decade so I have taken time to hone my skills and my eye for design and I will not cave to pressure from consumers to have my work produced en mass in China so they can receive it faster. This is a slow fashion label, every piece is made to order in small batches so I can concentrate on finishing each garment to the highest possible standard, something people in sweatshops don't get to do.
One of the worst aspects of the fashion industry is the huge amount of off cuts and waste from cutting out pieces which end up in landfill every year. With this in mind 99% of the off cuts from pieces you order are saved and donated to a local independent bird sanctuary to be used as bedding for injured wildlife, this means I send less than 1kg of fashion waste to landfill per year. From a fashion label that is a tiny amount compared to the tons of waste the larger labels send to landfill every single month.
We all need to take responsibility for the detrimental effects of the fashion industry on the planet as we all wear clothes. We can be more mindful in our choices by buying more second hand clothing, donating old clothes to charity instead of throwing them away and choosing ethical designers and labels to produce the garments we love. If you are patient and buy a handmade piece chances are you will wear it more and for longer because it's made to a much higher standard than mass produced fashion and you know it was made just for you.
If you have any questions on my way of working please drop me a message via the contact form. Standard turnaround for dispatch from date of order is usually between 2 and 4 weeks but can be as much as 6 to 8 weeks at very busy times.
